Tyler Martinson, care coordinator for the STAR Health Center, was honored for Professionalism this week in SUNY Downstate’s quarterly Employee Recognition Ceremony. Tyler conducts intensive case management for people newly diagnosed with HIV, those who are unable to adhere to their antiviral medication regimens, or who otherwise would be lost to care. He’s worked with the STAR Program for four years.

The other University Hospital employees honored were Shelly Blackman from the Emergency room for Pride; Prabhat Gupta, Information Technology, for Innovation; Yasmine Caesar, Nursing Station 61, for5 Respect; Dale Demas, Patient Access, for Diversity; Jacqueline Reid, Emergency Room, for Excellence, and Nicole Couse, Suite C, for Teamwork.

“My thanks and congratulations to the winners for their exemplary service to patients, to the community they serve, and to Downstate,” said Downstate President Wayne J. Riley, MD. “Your work and dedication keep Downstate on the trail to excellence, which is what we strive for. Thank you for what you do!”

Tyler earned a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and Community & Global Health from Macalester College in Saint Paul, MN. Prior to joining STAR, he focused his interest in health access among marginalized communities as a Fulbright Student researcher, investigating HIV/AIDS in Morocco. He worked with trans-Saharan migrants of irregular status to improve their understanding of the risk of infection and broaden their access to treatment and healthcare services, assessing patient needs and identifying barriers to service attainment.

The STAR Program provides prevention, testing and treatment for HIV and STIs, hepatitis care, and LGBTQ wellness services for the greater New York City area from Flatbush, Brooklyn. STAR’s field-based Medical Case Management (MCM)/Care Coordination Program was designed to re-engage lost-to-follow up patients living with HIV into consistent medical care and self-directed health promotion activities. Professionalism is a key priority for the STAR Health Center, which is a New York State Designated AIDS Center (DAC). All of the STAR Health Center’s primary care providers meet the New York State Department of Health AIDS Institute criteria as HIV Specialty Providers.
