Research Team

Susan Holman, RN, MS

Susan Holman, RN, MS, is the STAR Program’s HIV Research Projects Director. She has been involved in the research, education and care of HIV and related diseases for most of her career. She currently oversees the Brooklyn site of the national Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (MACS)/Women’s Interagency HIV Study (WIHS)/Combined Cohort Study (CCS) as well as other HIV research projects at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University and is actively involved in STAR’s international training projects. Prior to her tenure with STAR, Ms. Holman coordinated the Perinatal HIV Transmission Study and served four years as Project Director of the Obstetrical HIV Counseling/Testing/Care Initiative, a state-wide program, with the NYS Department of Health AIDS Institute.

 

Meredith Barish, CNM

Meredith Barish, CNM, joined the STAR Program in February 2022 as the Midwife for both the WIHS/MWCCS and the Family-Focused HIV Health Care Program (FFHCP).  Ms. Barish is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley (BS, Environmental Science) and Columbia University (BS, Nursing; MS, Midwifery). Prior to joining STAR, she worked for many years providing comprehensive prenatal and gynecological care to families throughout New York City, most recently for the Brooklyn Birthing Center and Jazz Birthing Center in Manhattan.

Susan Brockmann, MPH, LM

Susan Brockmann, MPH, LM, rejoined the STAR Program in September 2019 as the Study Coordinator for the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (MACS)/Women’s Interagency HIV Study (WIHS)/Combined Cohort Study (CCS). Ms. Brockmann is a graduate of Brown University (BS, Biomedical Ethics), Columbia University (MPH) and SUNY Downstate (midwifery). She previously worked with STAR as an HIV educator and trainer (1991-92), as the coordinator of a study of pelvic inflammatory disease and HIV (1992-94), and as program coordinator of a co-located GYN/HIV program (1994-97). After earning her midwifery degree at SUNY Downstate, she conducted a midwifery practice in Nassau County.  Ms. Brockmann will be seeing study patients a few sessions a week in addition to study coordination.

Raldyne Charles-Limage, MA

Raldyne Charles-Limage, MA, is the Assistant Study Coordinator for the Multicenter AIDS Cohort Study (MACS)/Women’s Interagency HIV Study (WIHS) Combined Cohort Study (MWCCS). She joined the STAR Program in 2008. She earned her BS and MA degrees in  Social Science at SUNY Binghamton, with concentrations in Nursing Health Care and Translation Studies.

Kanis Fatema, BS

Kanis Fatema, BS, joined STAR-Downstate in November 2021 as a Clinical Research Associate in the MACS/WIHS-CCS Program. Ms. Fatema received her Bachelor of Science in Psychology from City College of New York. She is an experienced case manager and coordinator assistant. In her former position at Alliance Lower Eastside Harm Reduction, she did administrative work, syringe exchange, and helped clients with drug overdose issues. She also had the privilege of supporting people with HIV and other chronic illnesses who experienced  other critical challenges.
