A Comprehensive Guide to Serodiscordant Relationships and PrEP.

Many older adults living with HIV are in serodiscordant partnerships, or intimate relationships with individuals that do not have HIV. Navigating safer sex practices in serodiscordant relationships can be challenging, especially if one person in the relationship is also coping with changing physical or sexual function, such as erectile dysfunction.

An important HIV prevention tool for serodiscordant relationships is Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), which is a medication that helps reduce the risk of transmission between serodiscordant partners. Accessing PrEP, however, can be difficult and expensive, even when it is available. The STAR Health Center at Downstate is participating in a new PrEP initiative called PlaySure 2.0 that it seeks to promote among older adults in serodiscordant relationships.

This program helps individuals understand how PrEP works, receive necessary medication and supportive services, develop effective communication strategies with their healthcare provider, monitor their partner’s health over time and ensure their partner remains adherent to the PrEP medication regimen. Additionally, the STAR Program provides counseling sessions to help couples build trust and understanding within their relationship while managing the challenges of living with an incurable virus together.

The STAR Program offers accessibility and affordability in terms of obtaining PrEP medication. It can also help guide couples to develop safer sex practices that protect both partners from contracting or transmitting HIV. Furthermore, regular checkups help identify any other health risks that may arise due to living with HIV and provide advice on how to maintain overall wellness throughout all stages of aging. Throug, financial assistance, education on adherence support, medical treatment resources and emotional guidance, the STAR Program provides a comprehensive approach towards structural empowerment to create healthier, safer outcomes for older HIV positive couples.
