Services

Primary Care

We at the STAR Health Center want to be your medical home, providing comprehensive care and prevention services to keep you healthy.  We have been designated as Level 3 Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA).  The STAR Health Center is the first ambulatory care program at SUNY to receive this prestigious distinction.  For an appointment, call 718.270.3745.

HIV Care

The STAR Health Center has provided comprehensive care for people with HIV since 1992. We provide a wide array of services that meet the special needs of women, men and families of diverse cultural backgrounds.  We provide HIV care from qualified HIV Specialists, while also caring for your other health care needs (such as diabetes, high blood pressure).  We offer medication adherence counseling, nutritional counseling, case management, home visits, mental health treatment and addiction services.

PrEP

If you are HIV-negative, but at-risk for acquiring HIV-infection, you may be interested in receiving PrEP at the STAR Health Center.  PrEP (or Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis), is a way to prevent HIV infection in people who do NOT have HIV, by taking a pill every single day.

HCV Care

STAR Health Center physicians are experts in the care and treatment of hepatitis C virus (HCV).  It is an exciting time in the treatment of HCV as new therapies with fewer side effects have been FDA approved, so even if you received treatment before and had problems with the medication your were given, you may be able to try one of the new medications.  We will also provide you with education and support around your treatment.

Behavioral Health

The STAR Health Center offers comprehensive and confidential treatment services for issues related to one or more problems related to depression, anxiety, domestic violence, trauma, addiction, or a combination of factors.  Our skilled providers will help you develop strategies to address these problems head-on and improve your quality of life.

Buprenorphine

If you struggle with addiction to opioids (such as heroin or oxycodone) you may be a candidate for buprenorphine treatment. A STAR Health Center physician will assess your eligibility for this medication.  If it is right for you, you will receive the initial doses at the health center and can then have future doses of the medication delivered to your home.

LGBT Health Initiative

At the STAR Health Center, our staff recognize the diverse needs of LGBT communities. We will provide you with confidential services from a knowledgeable health care team. We will also link you with other LGBT-friendly community-based organizations where you can get additional support and services if you need them.

Re-Entry Services

“Back to Brooklyn” (or B2B) is a program of the STAR Program aimed at providing immediate access to comprehensive medical care, behavioral health care and support services to the previously incarcerated. B2B is funded by the NYS Department of Health AIDS Institute’s Corrections to Community Care Continuum. The project, which started in August 2017, provides comprehensive care to previously incarcerated HIV+ individuals coming home to Brooklyn.
